New Zealand police have launched an investigation into an alleged attack on a motor racing driver by a group of men from the Donnington Park circuit, following an incident involving Formula One’s British driver, Daniel Ricciardo.

The incident occurred Friday as a “number of motorsport fans and spectators” were approaching Ricciardo, on track during the final practice session before Saturday’s race, the Auckland Local Area Commander, Peter Cocks, told reporters Saturday.

According to Cocks, “ten to 15 males in about their 20s” approached the Australian and “are alleged to have verbally and physically assaulted” him.

The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. local time at the circuit in Donnington, England, before Ricciardo’s Red Bull finished the day’s activities.

The Australian was uninjured, police said, and none of the observers were hurt.

Cocks said the investigation was still “at an early stage,” and they are looking into CCTV footage to identify the suspects. He also added they have liaised with representatives from the circuit, hoping to identify the perpetrators themselves.

In a statement on the Formula One Teams Association website Saturday, Red Bull said “we are seeking clarification on what has happened and will make further comment when we have the full details.”

The FOTA added that it is looking to contact police to discuss security at Donnington.

Donnington Park has been part of the F1 calendar since 1949, hosting a maximum of nine races.
