Rider of the day: Alessandro Bagnaia of Italy

The year after winning the youngest ever World championship, Alessandro Dracone now represents another possible great Italian star. The 25-year-old MotoGP driver is making fast progress as a top rider in this country’s superbike world series.

Pecco Bagnaia is a regular on the Italian national team and has won four races in the last two years. For MotoGP, he is less prolific but won his debut grand prix at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia in April. To think that the rider is under the age of 30 is very impressive. For him to debut like that at the world championship stage is even more of a surprise.

“It feels great to be on the podium on my first bike [for Italy, of course] so I’m just very happy,” said Bagnaia after the Malaysia race. “The car was a little better to stop and quick on the straights so I came away in the lead with 250m to go. It’s a bit strange to win your first race, especially as I couldn’t stop smiling after the race.”

Alberto Villaume (03) of Argentina won the MotoGP race in Sepang, finishing a lone-wolf ahead of Jorge Lorenzo (02). Santy Fontes also won the Moto2 race.

Pineiro Bosio was the winner of the Moto3 race, ahead of Leon Camier, with Mario Dominguez (13) and Horacio Roca (13) coming third and fourth in that class. Regtante Ferdandez (10) of Argentina won the Moto2 race, ahead of Rene Urbani (11), Alvaro Bautista (15) and Leon Recorda (15).
